I won this ARC in September 2017, and I was no under obligation by anyone to review it.
That being said, this was a very surprising book. To those that know me, they know that I normally despise anything that is fantasy related. This one, however, drew me in. This book is not set in a completely fantastical world. In fact, it starts off in New York City and starts off with strong contemporary vibes until a very unusual event happens.
Alice is the granddaughter of a reclusive author who wrote a book of uncommon fairy tales. She has known this growing up as she and her mom live life on the move, moving from place to place, never staying longer than 6 months. She has no idea what the stories are about because her mom refuses to speak of them, and the copies of the book that exist are disappearing out of existence.
After a very shocking event happens at Alice’s apartment, she turns to Finch, a boy from school, who knows much about her grandmother’s tales. They set out to look for the Hazel Wood with some very creepy encounters along the way.
Main reason for taking off a star is because I started struggling with the last 70 pages or so. It felt like so much world building had started to happen, but a lot was left too open and unexplained for my liking in those 70 pages.
That being said, still check it out.
